Super Mario Brothers, Nintendo 64 hit the gaming industry in the mid 1980’s and no one was quite sure what to expect as far as video games went. However, this great game from the original Super Mario Bros. series turned out to be an instant hit for Nintendo gamers. The graphics were simple, the gameplay was fast-paced and many gamers loved the inclusion of various unlockable characters due to the ordination Chip World of the original game.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is another classic in the Super Mario Bros. Series and was released in 1990 – the sequel to the prior game. Mario and Luigi were once again apiece andsoldierically joined by Yoshi, who is also a character in many other Nintendo games. Mario and Luigi and eight new characters, each representing one of the eight NES games, joined Mario in this hectic action – The Lost Levels.
Yoshi reappears in Yoshi’s Island in 1995, while Wario appears in the 1995 game based on the WarioWare cartoon series. Arguably, WarioWare was the most recognizable and popular game for many of the Nintendo 64 gamers. It wasn’t just Wario that was covered – in fact, numerous Nintendo 64 games, specifically Super Mario 64, were all based on the fast-paced action of Wario games.
Many Nintendo 64 games were released between October 1996 and May 1997, and there were a variety of different concepts used in each. horrible clone games were released using the characters and likenesses of characters from the Final Fantasy series, Spiderman, The Simpsons, nursery rhymes, and even the greatest loves of all time, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Really, what are you supposed to do with these great characters in games, N64 yours?
As the popularity of the Nintendo 64 increased, so were the prices. While it remained popular for a variety of reasons, the price points for these games skyrocketed and today the average working Nintendo 64 game console is upwards of twenty to thirty dollars. The simple, yet highly successful game Donkey Kong 64 is available for as little as seven dollars. This game may, or may not, have been influenced by Atari’s classic arcade game Pac-Man. There was a clamor from Nintendo gamers for “the more affordable one.”… that is, until Sony’s PlayStation hit the market.
The Nintendo 64 was reworked multiple times as each console tried to gain popularity. When Nintendo gained in popularity, Sega wanted in on the popularity and luckily the first Sonic game hit the market. Amazingly enough, this is considered to be the first game with the characters of Sonic the Hedgehog and did not use Mario or another Nintendo 64 character. In fact, Sega felt so accomplished that they were making console games using characters that are no longer a “Nintendo 64 game.” This is known to be one of the most annoying reasons for the demise of the Nintendo 64.
As the popularity of the Nintendo 64 increased so did the prices for the games and it became a problem for many who were trying to save their money. While this cost penalty was on there, Nintendo was happy. They knew that if the CD format continued to increase in popularity, the Nintendo 64 would have a harder time expanding their business. CD’s held more data and allowed for better graphics and more choices for consumers.
The Nintendo 64 was introduced to the market in 2001 and to this day remains one of the most popular consoles in the world. The PlayStation 2 was introduced to the market in 2000 and has also become a very popular game console. Overall, the Nintendo 64 remains one of the most popular consoles in the world of video games.
It certainly brings back memories of my days of owning one and the amount of time wasted playing it.
Sega as we now know, has not only expanded their borders, but had created a video game console that is not only powerful, but is also affordable. So if you like to get a thrill on video games, check out the Nintendo 64. I know it is an old relic from the past but one that still packs hours of guilty enjoyment.
